Holiday Pet Safety

The holiday season is upon us, and many pet parents plan to include their furry companions in the festivities. As you gear up for the holidays, it is important to remember to keep your pet’s safety top of mind.

Petworks Veterinary Hospital has you & your four-legged family members covered with some helpful holiday guidelines to help keep your pet(s) safe!

Holiday Eats & Drinks

While this time of year may include some of the best food, we recommend keeping your pet’s diet the same as any other day. If planning on hosting or attending a celebration that includes alcoholic beverages, be sure not to leave your drink unattended where pets can get to them.

Decorations & Lights

You may have more festive décor out this time of year, so be sure to keep wires, batteries and glass or plastic ornaments out of paws’ reach. Wires can deliver potentially lethal electrical shock and punctured batteries can cause burns to the mouth and esophagus, while shards of breakable ornaments can damage your pet’s mouth and digestive tract.

Candles & Fireplace (Open Flames)

Whether you are lighting a menorah or filling your home with scented candles, or even enjoying the fireplace make sure you do not leave any open flames unattended. Curious paws and happy wagging tails could knock them over, potentially burning your pet or starting a fire.

A Few More Tips

• Use pet-friendly ice melt on frozen surfaces.
• Poinsettias, mistletoe, holly and other floral decorations can cause gastrointestinal and cardiovascular problems.
• Make a SAFE space for your pet(s) to get away from the noise and loud commotion of visiting guests during the holidays.
• Updated I.D. / Collar / Emergency Info & Microchip

All of us at Petworks Veterinary Hospital hope you and your pet(s) have a safe, happy holiday season!
